Perang di Jalan Allah – Ibrahim Alfian

Review

POETRY OF KINDERGARTEN

children play ball in raindrop

in the joy of togetherness

children play ball without burden of misery

without being overshadowed by fear

without a veil of hypocrisy

if the world is like this reality

how beautiful

children play and keep playing

YANG MENGGELANDANG

Pernahkah kita bertanya, seberdosakan apakah kita? Ketika memilih tidak berbuat.

YANG MENGGELANDANG

Kita mesti pergi pagi-pagi

Sebelum kita kena guyur lagi

Sama pemilik emperan toko ini

Seperti kemarin kita alami

Ayo nak, kita ke pinggir kali

Mana tau ada rezeki

Dapat sampah syukur sekali

Bisa tukar sesuap nasi

Ayo anakku sayang, ayo kemari

Jangan kamu rewel lagi

Tak sanggup ibu menyusulmu lagi

Apalagi berjalan kesana kemari

Aduh sayang jangan nangis lagi

Tak usah ratapi dirimu sendiri

Walau perut belum terisi

Sudah nasib kita tertulis begini

Suratan takdir ditentukan gusti

Ayo anakku sayang, ayo kemari

Sudah peluk saja ibumu ini

Cuma ini yang dapat ibu beri

Kelak kau ingat besar nanti

DISEASE TO DEATH

Human evolves over time, so does the problem of life.

DISEASE TO DEATH

Human life in the world is only temporary, like a traveler journey at this time we just take a moment under the shade tree. Although for a moment, this temporary stopover became the key to the next journey. Determine the direction of heaven or hell someday, amid the heavy burden of this man must avoid a deadly disease called despair. Every human will surely experience this desperate disease. For that, humans have to treat themselves.

Human must think about the various relationships that have something to do with him. Parents, lovers, friends, work, future, and others. That’s what we call ourselves! And it is related to self. There is a concern in organizing every related relationship in that life. Confusion to do this and that, if this and that. That balance makes people hesitate, while time keeps moving forward.

Human has no experience of dealing with the future, in terms of success and failure, he can only see what happened behind. That’s annoying.

Every human being is a thinker

For a thinker (every human being is a thinker), the number of through difficulties will make understanding plus the look of human life. We can divide human beings into two kinds of life.

  1. A sensitive way of life, a selfish way of living, wanting to fill his life with external stimuli, usually a miserable life. Or an important moment of pleasure, do not think long but feel the need for a deep relationship;
  2. A way of life that depends on what is outside of yourself like wealth, branded goods, big names, awards, titles. Always need external stimulation. This way of life makes self-reliance lost, and can not control yourself. There is no peace and tranquility, carried away by external stimuli.

In fact, losing oneself is tantamount to despair. But this feeling of hopelessness can not be felt from drowning into stimuli (feeling winning, when actually losing). And anyone can live every day as usual, while carried away to the shallow place psychologically.

In fact, the main life problem of this way of life is not being responsible to yourself. The person who thinks all of his actions are effects from the outside will do anything irresponsible, and throw his own responsibility.

Some people (including authors) have also done that when he wants to forget all the trouble of avoiding escaping. And losing self, discarding responsibility for yourself. But luckily I can go back to myself, thanks to the people I love.

But it is true, the world is coincidental but consequent and realistic. Therefore humans are easy to live a sensitive lifestyle that is dominated by outside influences, but there must be a way of life rooted in our own lives so that we find alternative ways of life. That is the ethical way of life.

Ethical is how one is like living. Clearly, the ethical way is a way of life that relies on oneself. And this way of life aims to escape from a sensitive despair through a strong determination. The ethical way of life accepts all responsibilities that are self-related, choosing the most appropriate for oneself. Realizing that it was not someone else who made me like this, but myself, I chose myself through various possibilities (path of life). Among the possibilities that exist in the self, there is a strong determination to face the world, of course with his own efforts.

Choose yourself with your own responsibility (often a small decision that changes the way of life) and accepts the risks. Because to be who we want to be, we must move on with our own strengths (also forgive ourselves for the mistakes of the past). Trying to choose oneself for an unclear future, without blaming others.

But, not everyone can do this way of life perfectly. Because the world is all coincidental (eg want to be a poet but suddenly because of the circumstances must work as an accountant). Each person has their own living conditions. The important thing is acceptable or not, like dialectics.

Because the future is uncertain, indeed all will be afraid, if told to be yourself or shown others way of life. Of course, you (and I) also can not accept that “I wish I was not what I was expecting” is not it? If so, the feeling must be stopped.

Human should not despair of losing oneself. Are you aware? Someone when alone starts talking to himself and approaching self-existence. There are times of avoiding the substance of self-hating and self-despising thinking. Perhaps the present is considered hopeless and begins to look at his substance including hating yourself, even in the future. Actually, the condition was not despair but disappointed.

Despair is actually losing the substance of self or losing oneself. The deadly disease is when the self-does do not want to be responsible to self, or the same as despair. Despair is not self-chosen or an undesirable identity. Then when the truly despairing human being who comes to him is death! Identity has been dying.

The death of the body is not the actual death, but the death of the soul is the actual death.

The death of the body is not the actual death, but the death of the soul is the actual death. Losing substance, the substance is the freedom of the soul’s desire of the self. Therefore, when the self-wants to choose you with full responsibility, there must be a sense of worry in order not to choose the identity. All of that is caused by worry when the self is facing the substance of self.

Humans are desperate to escape from worry. Human thinking, which I do not want to face is not a weak self, but I am afraid and do not want to face the true substance of the self. All fear of the future and the responsibility and freedom to transform into a new self.

The human theme that lives in the present, is the theme of passing fear and approaching the substance of the self. It is true, as long as man lives, he can not avoid despair. Because of the despair itself, it exists with a substance called human.

There is some despair that exists with human substance. And so that people can be more aware of themselves, in the end, there are three kinds of despair that can make the death of the self.

  1. The despair of the surface of the despair of a sensitive way of life. A state in which the human is not aware of the despair of forgetting the freedom of self to become a new human being. Despair because of self-does not want to find the identity and just live to have fun. Humans that can live despite despair, but the human can not be separated from the empty sense that appears unnoticed. However, to fulfill this void, it seeks outer value but delusion, it will not satisfy itself and will not free from discouragement. And the human soul will be brought to the lower stream and seek the worse / position himself, and laugh at him;
  2. Desperate for knowing the substance of the self. This despair is a desperate form of human who wants to confront the substance of the self. A genuine form of hopelessness than the one previously mentioned above. Desperate for not wanting to be true identity, for wanting to avoid reality, worry because freedom and responsibility choose an identity. Despair for cowards, for fear of mocking themselves. He confines himself and closes his heart, does not know about freedom and responsibility and can not hear outside sounds. But while avoiding the substance of the self, the fact that the self-has do not become a desirable figure continues to haunt, it is the voice that wants a new figure to continue to grow and suffering continues. One day he imagined death physically. Even though he realized it would not solve anything. Desperate for not wanting to be one’s self, it is desperate despair and alienation;
  3. Desperate for wanting to be an unrighteous identity. Desperate for trying to defy responsibility and freedom in choosing an identity. The despair of the grumpy. Today more and more people have this kind of hopelessness. He rejects substance and feels irresponsible in finding the true identity. Like giving up the full responsibility to the community. He feels himself at this moment because of everything that exists outside of him. He thinks that when anger is his true right, he feels himself who can not change for the better because of others, and that suffering does not escape. Because, by feeling himself as a victim, he can attack others and still be considered right. By considering all enemies, he discards his identity and is not free from suffering. He felt hurt so he could harm others, always be in the mind of evil, and attacked everyone other than himself. The despair of this type is resistance, they fantasize as a victim.

Despair is a human weakness, the three examples above are the conditions in which humans are really desperate.

Humans are altogether free, it is difficult to live straight and ethically. Despair for humans has not changed from before until now. We must be aware that the suffering of despair will continue, we must awaken ourselves about despair and help at least ourselves.

Humans (including me) as individuals, in order to deal with the substance of the self, and manifesting the existence of the self, must know the ethical path, the difficult ethical path in order to become the desired figure. And at the same time understand the weakness of self, weakness shaped the fear of freedom, responsibility, and future.

I must live ethically, ethically toward the future. So what should I live for? Can I say that all this time my choice is not wrong? Actually, during life, that worry must exist. And is it after humans know the substance of self, then the fear will be lost? Certainly not!

Human evolves over time, so does the problem of life. The way humans avoid from despair is to live with higher levels of soul. And it’s hard to move for the better every time.

So the way out of despair is religion. Islam teaches sincerity. Sincere is the highest science facing destiny, which is difficult though. Sincere is the sacredness of the heart in worshiping God as well as relating to fellow human beings. Cleans the heart and purifies the intention without sanctions and excessive presumptions to anyone. Forgive others, and forgive yourself for all the mistakes of the past. Because a tricky mistake in the past will be an obstacle to improvement to the future, what if he becomes traumatized. Sincere is pure, without conspiracy. With a clean heart then the mind will be clean anyway.

By being a sincere individual, human beings are free to choose themselves ethically and dialectically and build self-worth, because the world is built from many selves. Everyone must find the value of self-building. With a determination to find what is becoming dissatisfaction in oneself, and find the value that becomes the handle of life.

Among everyday life, there must be much doubt about what has been done. But if you have value (religion), when you feel lost to weakness, that value will help you.

The human must go on ahead, even though it is faced with a strong current that can deprive itself. Human also brings wounds of the past, but to move on, he must be brave! Though it means having to risk all the existence of the self. To create a better self, we must fight with life.

Every human being (including myself and you) is the main character of your life. Choose and make your choices with confidence. Every day we choose ourselves without getting tired of the hope of happiness tomorrow. Do not be afraid to fail! And face it bravely!

AT THE CROSSROADS

Today on the road
I have to choose which way to go

AT THE CROSSROADS

Too much doubt stoning the soul

It will be a never-assured future

One by one the dreams fall

Together with the stinging sea breeze

Where is the glory when there is no courage

Why be shy

Recognize that the soul has ballooned

Rotting in prejudice

Indecision is implied

In tranquility with a smile

Today on the road

I have to choose which way to go

POETRY OF THE WANDERER

I have been wandering along the west and east coasts.

POETRY OF THE WANDERER

I have been wandering along the west and east coasts

On the shore of this desolate shore, I was alone and witnessed

I love this life when I cried when half the land became an ocean

And to this day, finding my beloved is gone

I am just a wanderer now

I am tired of wandering all the time

I want to rest with friends who have preceded me

Pain for the poor

HAPPY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE

Happy for those who have

Pain for the poor

Like oil and water

Happy for those who have

Pain for the poor

Happy for those who have

Pain for the poor

Such as servants and masters

It’s really hard for the poor

Really nervous for the rich

THE ORIGIN OF THE COFFEE CULTURE IN ACEH

For Acehnese, coffee shops are a gathering place, meeting and discussing topics.

THE ORIGIN OF THE COFFEE CULTURE IN ACEH

Is coffee a long-standing cultural tradition in Aceh?

Coffee culture was not found in Aceh until near the end of the 19th Century. An orientalist who became a sociocultural researcher, Snouck Hurgronye wrote in The Achehnese Volume I, during his research of the Acehnese, “For most ordinary people in Aceh, water is almost the only drink, from time to time (occasionally) it will drink sugar cane juice, squeezed from the trunk only with a very primitive tool.” From this situation, the term “ngon bloe ie teubee” means more or less: “sugar cane buyer money” if it is meant to pay wages or rewards.”

Means “tomorrow morning we will drink coffee in Meulaboh city or I will be martyr”, that is a series of short words Teuku Umar which is inscribed on the Inscription in Mugoe Village, Meulaboh

February 11, 1899, Teuku Umar and his troops have been on the outskirts of Meulaboh. The Acehnese warriors were surprised to learn that Van Heutsz’s troops had intercepted them. The position of his troops is not profitable and no longer possible to withdraw. The only way to save his army was to fight. In the battle, Teuku Umar was killed by enemy bullets that pierced his chest. “Beungoh singoh geutanyoe jep kupi in keude Meulaboh atawa ulon akan syahid” means “tomorrow morning we will drink coffee in Meulaboh city or I will be martyr”, that is a series of short words Teuku Umar which is inscribed on the Inscription in Mugoe Village, Meulaboh at the end of the struggle. Based on Teuku Umar’s words it is certain that coffee has been circulating in Aceh at that time but still an expensive imported goods. The murder of Teuku Umar occurred 26 years after the Aceh War took place and 5 years after Snouck Hurgronje’s book was published (1893-1894).

When is the coffee planted in Aceh?

Aceh was the world’s largest producer of pepper in the 19th century

At the time of the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam, pepper plant is the main livelihood as rice. Tome Pires (1512-1515) noted that Pidie and Pasai harbors then traded 16,000 Bahar (a measure of weight about 400 lb) or about 2,718 tonnes per year. Even until near the end of the 19th century before the Dutch attacked, Aceh was the world’s leading producer of pepper. On 26 March 1873 the Dutch declared war on the Sultanate of Aceh, the war continued until 1904. Sultan Muhammad Daudsyah was captured by the Dutch in January 1904, the great war ended but the Acehnese resistance with guerrilla war continued until the Dutch left Aceh forever in 1942. The war with the Dutch had made Aceh’s pepper glory disappear and only became a memory.

The coffee plant was originally brought by the Dutch in the eighteenth century through Batavia (now Jakarta) to be planted in Aceh in 1908. The first coffee introduced was Arabica coffee first cultivated in North Lake Lut Tawar. In the world, coffee can be divided into 2 groups by type, namely Arabica coffee and Robusta coffee. In Aceh, these two types of coffee are cultivated by the local community. Arabica coffee is commonly cultivated in the highlands of Gayo Land, including Takengon, Southeast Aceh, and Gayo Lues. While in Pidie (mainly Tangse and Geumpang) and West Aceh, communities develop Robusta coffee. The Netherlands ordered the people of Aceh who became farmers at that time to consume Robusta coffee, while Arabica for self-consumption (Netherlands) and for export.

Gayo coffee is a premium commodity that is recognized worldwide

In Aceh, the Netherlands discovered a vast plateau known as Gayo Land located in the heart of this region, which based on the research they did was very suitable for planting Coffee. And from where the magic began. In Gayo Land, the Netherlands builds its government base in Takengon which is located right on the shore of Lake Lut Tawar whose surface is at an altitude of 1250 Mdpl. Lately, this city developed into a center of economy and government and became the largest city in Gayo Land. The first Dutch-developed coffee plantation in the area called Belang is located not far from the city. To this day, this area is known as one of the best coffee producing areas in Gayo Land. From Belang Gele, Coffee spread to all corners of Gayo Land with cool mountain air.

In 1924 the Dutch and European investors had begun making land dominated by coffee, tea, and vegetable crops (John R Bowen, Sumatran Politics, and Poetics, Gayo History 1900-1989, page 76). Then, in 1933, in Takengon, 13,000 hectares of land had been planted with coffee called the Netherlands as a commodity “Product for future”. Gayo society writes John R Bowen, is very quick to accept (adopt) new crops and plant them in the limited lands of citizens. New settlements in that era, especially along the road are cleared for export-quality coffee.

History of Arabica Gayo Coffee

After the War of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia (1945-1949), the Dutch finally recognized the independence of the Republic of Indonesia through the Round Table Agreement (KMB). As happened in Java, all their assets including coffee plantations are left behind in Gayo. But unlike in Java, the operation of the plantation is continued by government companies and the workers are still employed in Java. In Gayo, things are different. After the Dutch left, the remaining coffee gardens were distributed to local communities, especially those previously employed there.

Lyas Leubee (right) was talking to Daud Beureueh (left) in Beureunun in 1958

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia granted all the coffee plantations in Gayo land to a Gayo military officer named Ilyas Leubee who in the revolution became one of the leaders in Medan Area battlefield. Ilyas Leubee did not take the gift for himself. Distributed it to the surrounding community and did not continue the management of the gardens, so the Dutch heritage factory was neglected and became the old iron until now. Found that coffee plants are very profitable. Farmers who did not get even coffee plantations started planting empty land around them with coffee crops, so there are at least 90,000 hectares of coffee plantations in the Gayo highlands that are now separated into three districts (Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, and Gayo Luwes). This makes the Gayo highlands the largest Arabica coffee producer not only in Indonesia but also Asia. Because Gayo’s coffee plantation is managed by individual farmers with a maximum average land holding of 2 hectares.

Map of the Sultanate of Aceh (Late 19th century)

Aceh’s lush natural conditions, combined with supportive weather, have made Aceh’s coffee plants thrive into a high-quality, profitable commodity. Indonesia is the world’s fourth-largest coffee exporter, and Aceh is one of the largest coffee producers capable of producing about 40% of the premium Arabica beans of total coffee harvest in Indonesia.

This phenomenon occurs because Aceh does have a vast coffee plantation stretching between the Bukit Barisan mountains covering the district of Central Aceh which has an area of 48,500 hectares of coffee plantations, Bener Meriah 39.000 Hectare and Gayo Luwes covering 7,000 hectares. Total Highland Gayo coffee plantation around 94.5000 hectares mostly cultivated type of arabica coffee with the production reaches 50,774 tons per year.

With the vastness of Aceh’s plantations, it is only natural that Aceh is one of the largest suppliers of Arabica coffee in the world and Asia’s largest coffee producer. The type of arabica coffee developed by farmers on the Gayo highlands has the smoothest texture and the richest and most complex taste.

Unfortunately, at this time, the Gayo Coffee brand is registered under Dutch law on behalf of Holland Coffee which openly prohibits others from using Gayo on their coffee brands. Whereas Gayo itself is a geographical area owned by Indonesia is not the Netherlands.

History of Robusta Coffee Aceh

Robusta coffee beans are produced from selected quality coffee beans, mostly from Lamno, Aceh Jaya District. The coffee beans are produced by small and medium enterprises. By the locals, this high-quality coffee powder is then uniquely processed, from grinding to filtering to a cup in a separate way. This is why Aceh coffee, especially coffee Ulee Kareng is then transformed into an icon of Aceh itself. The awesomeness of Aceh’s coffee aroma has long been legendary in Indonesia and is now also worldwide thanks to a large number of coffee lovers from international workers who came and lived in Aceh for many years to reconstruct Aceh after the tsunami.

A Glass of Robusta Coffee Typical of Aceh

To get the unique taste, Aceh coffee beans through a long process. First of all, usually, coffee beans in diesel for 4 hours. After reaching maturity 80%, coffee beans mixed with sugar and butter with a certain dose. Then the cooked coffee beans are ground until smooth. This process evokes the aroma of strong coffee, a clean taste, and no sour taste.

What makes Aceh coffee more interesting is its distinctive presentation style that is different from the way coffee is served anywhere in the world. Coffee brewed with water kept steady. The steaming coffee is filtered repeatedly with a strainer made of cloth, then poured from one kettle to another. The result is a very solid coffee, fragrant, and clean without containing coffee powder.

Coffee Culture Boom in Aceh

One of the wonders of time is its ability to change people. Similarly, the habits of society with all its activities must change according to the times. If in the nineteenth century the people of Aceh knew absolutely no coffee, so until the end of the 20th century Aceh was still a major coffee producer then in the 21st century the coffee culture has become part of the Acehnese tradition.

In 2004, the tsunami hit Indonesia. Aceh is the greatest area affected by the disaster, so many people from all over the world come to Aceh to provide humanitarian aid. At that time the world has started to like coffee globally so they bring a new culture of coffee.

Previously, the people of Aceh already know coffee. For coffee-growing areas, there are many coffee shops in Aceh but still limited to adult males (at least students) and more in the township. After 2004 the world coffee culture is getting “booming” in Aceh, both day and night, the various layers of Aceh people fill the coffee shops to be invited to drink coffee. Unlimited from the old to the young, male or female, poor or rich, all mingling without barriers.

Today’s coffee culture is a post-modern culture in the world.

If there are criteria for the number of coffee shops in certain area size then it can be ascertained that Banda Aceh (the capital of Aceh province) will enter the world record (beating Paris though). Even if there is a calculation of the number of people to the coffee shop per day the winner must be the people of Aceh (beat Italy certainly). After the Tsunami, the Aceh conflict ended with peace talks causing freedom to return after years of conflict.

Coffee is a miraculous drink, at least for the tongue of Aceh (and or affected), because it can change according to place. Rumors circulated among the wives about husbands who do not want to drink coffee at home, even though the coffee powder is the same as in the stall is proven to be valid. Like the status quo, the reason for the compact husband, that coffee at home is not as good as in a coffee shop.

In the past, people only knew black coffee, even though there was only milk or sugar mixture. The way the presentation is simple, urban people not only regard coffee as a necessity but also with a lifestyle. In fact, now in Aceh has mushroomed premium coffee shops.

Even so, enjoying Aceh’s coffee not only enjoys the taste but also the cultural traditions. In Aceh, coffee shops gather, meet and discuss topics. For the people of Aceh, visiting coffee shops is an integral part of daily activities. There they socialize and gather while enjoying coffee. They come to enjoy coffee, as a place to meet friends or business associates, or just simply unwind. “All problems can be finished in the coffee shop”, so the popular proverb in Aceh.

Perhaps coffee was originally introduced and planted by the Dutch in the colonial period, but later on, coffee developed and blended in the culture of Aceh so that now becomes part of the way and living life of people living in Aceh.

THE POET

There must be a man who believes in the power of a heart that believes in truth, even though he never believed in the face of truth.

THE POET

What is the ability of a poet to the world’s worth, to the loss of the nearest? As the moonlight dims, there really is not. Just stringing words that have long existed. When I write a less sacred poem, I am grateful for what is written on this sheet if it benefits anyone. Maybe someday everything will go, then let it be a beautiful memory. Man will ultimately be the memory of those who are left behind when his presence vanishes.

When I woke up, I opened my eyes to the carved ceiling. Outside, the night was still in power and the voices of the townspeople flew from the glittering city below. Who will wait for this anxiety, where I come from? Who will display anxiety if I fail? Should I feel disappointed? Actually, I have a face that always changes over time, there are times when I feel lost in this odyssey. But actually, I’m a loser, I admitted sincerely. Although people always tell me, that I’ve done my best but at the same time, I hate myself for not doing anything. I hate myself who has no power whatsoever. If I remember the years that passed, I do not want to repeat the feelings I’ve experienced, all the mistakes and anger even though I hide, for people who already know, still know.

Some people in the world avoid what some other people in the same world want when I feel these voices go into a vacuum. Some people think it’s too high up to scare it, but I’ve never tried to grandiose. I do not know, I always feel that there is something rotten behind something grandiose. If they knew, all these thoughts came from one’s daydream in the wooden booth. But sometimes, there is an unexpected occurrence when a work is finished, as if magical hands glued in unfathomable depths. A true verse is not just words but rather self-discipline, which may be immeasurable. A precious moment, something when nothing means nothing. I am too naive to think God’s hand is also playing here. Maybe I am a scholar, but we are obliged to believe there is a presence of God in every event.

Actually, there are certain moments where we must still have to fight even though actually do not want to. Maybe think if you have no other hope. Apart from all the world’s uncleanness, there must be a man who believes in the power of a heart that believes in truth, even though he never believed in the face of truth. This is the gaze of someone who has experienced inner turmoil and has made the decision to become a poet. I have no idea. The earth and its contents are a very small part of the universe. For people, it turns out that the earth with this horizon is very wide. There are many things that remain a mystery to human beings. Let not the knowledge of the sky written in the holy book, even humans do not even understand who he is.
