Buku ini pada intinya merupakan kumpulan kisah kegagalan Snouck Hurgronje yang meneliti tentang aceh. Meskipun gaya bahasa yang digunakan pengarang pada penulisan buku ini masih banyak yang kurang dimengerti (rancu), tapi buku ini mengkaji secara kronologis perang Aceh dari tahun 1873 (Perang Aceh Pertama) sampai tahun 1942 (Menyerahnya Belanda kepada Jepang).
