Buku ini pada intinya merupakan kumpulan kisah kegagalan Snouck Hurgronje yang meneliti tentang aceh. Meskipun gaya bahasa yang digunakan pengarang pada penulisan buku ini masih banyak yang kurang dimengerti (rancu), tapi buku ini mengkaji secara kronologis perang Aceh dari tahun 1873 (Perang Aceh Pertama) sampai tahun 1942 (Menyerahnya Belanda kepada Jepang). MUSIBAH TENGGELAMNYA KMP GURITA (1996)

Musibah tenggelamnya KMP Gurita terjadi pada tahun 1996 di Teluk Balohan, Sabang. Kapal Motor Penumpang (KMP) Gurita yang mengangkut 378 penumpang, tenggelam ke dasar laut. Dari jumlah penumpang itu, 40 orang dapat diselamatkan, 54 ditemukan tewas dan 284 orang di nyatakan hilang bersama-sama dengan KMP Gurita yang tidak berhasil di angkat dari dasar laut.
